Highway Expansion - Creating Tomorrows Problems Today

Highway Expansion Visual Impacts
Is Highway Expansion the best visual solution for the I-70 Corridor?
Not likely, unless you are an asphalt contractor and love lots of black. CDOT anticipates that a six lane highway’s landform changes and structural elements will disfigure the landscape in the mountain corridor. The potential landform changes involve cuts and fills, retaining walls, and changing open medians to paved, closed medians. The project’s potential structural elements include bridges, piers, columns, elevated platforms, barriers and fencing, all of which could have a negative visual effect.
Contrast is a method that measures the level of visual disruption the highway expansion project will likely impose on the landscape. Some highway expansion structural elements could have very strong contrasts with the land and its resources. The project’s landform changes and structural elements will potentially interfere with the spectacular mountain and valley views along the corridor. Decreases in visibility resulting from the increased air pollution from a six lane highway will also interfere with the mountain and valley views along the corridor.
The view of six lanes of bumper to bumper traffic, increased re-entrained dust and air pollution will detract from Colorado's High Country scenery and could negatively impact Colorado's Tourism Industry by providing a Los Angeles Freeway in the mountains look and feel. Is this what we really want for the future of Colorado?
